“The purpose of Olive Hill's Main Street/Renaissance Organization is to enhance our community identity and heritage, foster a center of activity and ensure economic stability for the heart of downtown Olive Hill through concentrated efforts of design, promotion, organization and economic revitalization.”
Olive Hill’s Main Street/Renaissance board of directors and committee members focus on the full spectrum of revitalization efforts to address issues that affect the heart of our downtown. We use The National Trust’s Main Street Center’s guidelines for the four-point approach in all of our revitalization efforts. The four-point approach is a community-driven, comprehensive method used to revitalize older, traditional business districts throughout the United States. It is a common-sense way to address the variety of issues and problems that face traditional business districts. The underlying premise of the Main Street approach is to encourage economic development within the context of historic preservation in ways appropriate to today's marketplace. The Main Street approach advocates a return to community self-reliance, local empowerment, and the rebuilding of traditional commercial districts based on their unique assets: distinctive architecture, a pedestrian-friendly environment, personal service, local ownership, and a sense of community.
Committees are the backbone of a successful Main Street Program. Committees serve important functions:
-
Committees implement the programs activities.
-
Committees provide a structured framework through which they can become actively involved in the revitalization process.
-
Committees enable members of various groups with a stake in the district’s future to work together to accomplish common goals and build new or strengthen existing relationships.
-
Committees help develop new leadership to sustain the revitalization efforts for years to come.
We are always seeking volunteers who are interested in the revitalization efforts of our community. If you are interested in volunteering your time and expertise on any of the following committees, contact the Program Manager at (606) 286-5533 ext. 22.
Promotion
Promotion committee members work to sell the image and promise of the Main Street district to all prospects. By marketing the districts unique characteristics to shoppers, investors, new businesses, and visitors, an effective promotion strategy forges a positive image through advertising, retail promotional events and activities, special events and marketing campaigns carried out by volunteers.

Design
Design means getting Main Street into top physical shape. Capitalizing on its best assets-such as historic buildings with traditional pedestrian-oriented layouts-is just part of what an effective design committee does. An inviting atmosphere, created through window displays, parking areas, building improvements, street furniture, signs, sidewalks, street lights, and landscaping conveys a visual message about what the commercial district is and what it has to offer. City Beautiful serves as the Main Street/Renaissance Program Design Committee.

Economic Restructuring
Economic Restructuring strengthens a community’s economic assets while diversifying the economic base. By helping existing businesses to expand, assisting with new business development and recruiting new businesses to respond to today’s market, Main Street programs help convert unused and underutilized space into productive property and sharpen the competitiveness and profitability of businesses.

Organization
Organization means getting everyone working toward the same goal. Using a volunteer-driven program with an organizational structure of a governing board and committees can ease the tough work of building consensus and cooperation among the groups that have a stake in our downtown.
